Lately I've taken a habit of writing different kind of positive lists into a notebook dedicated for this. I list things that inspire me, things I would like to do, places I would like to visit, things that I am thankful for, and so on. The most recent list I wrote under the title "What I would like to see in lolita next". I thought I'd share that with you, too. So, here we go...
♥ More natural, but still gorgeous make up styles
♥ Relaxed (e.g. curly hair kept loose) hairdos made of one's own hair
♥ Practicality, wearability, comfyness
♥ Dainty, elegant outfits with some historical influence - "old times" feeling
♥ Old school lolita influences
♥ Having fun with colours
♥ Luxurious details (such as lace, bows, frills)
♥ Great quality fabrics (e.g. cotton velvet, silk, linen) and shoes (real leather only)
I long for this fashion to move towards more relaxed, wearable direction. I wish to see outfits that are easy and comfy to wear, but not boring in the least. Oufits that are of great quality and coordinated with care and love to detail. Outfits that you can wear for a trip to your local library, or a nice cup of tea at your favorite tea shop. Outfits that even on a hot summer day feel good to wear. In short, I would like to see outfits that are less costume-like and more natural. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I am getting tired of this trend or always more, always bigger, always better. I would like to see something more simple for a change.
All that being said, I'd like to introduce you to a small, starting clothing brand owned by two Finnish ladies, Twin Flower.
They make beautiful lolita clothes using recycled materials whenever
that's possible. Their brand just happens to have just the kind of look that
inspires me right now. All of the pictures used for this post are from
Twin Flower (and posted with their permission) - so please do check out
their Facebook page, and if you like what you see, remember to show your support to them.
What would you, dear readers, like to see in lolita (or fashion in general) next? Feel free to discuss in the comments!
P.S. Since someone is most likely going to ask this, if I don't say it, I spill it out now; no, this blog post is not sponsored or suggested by Twin Flower. All of the opinions, as well as my adoration for this brand, are purely my own and genuine. First I wrote my list by hand, then I thought about making it into a blog post, and only after that I had the idea that Twin Flower's pictures would go greatly with this post. They are saving me a lot of trouble by kindly letting me use their pictures, and I like to promote Finnish design whenever I get the chance, so this is a win-win situation all around.
P.P.S. To those (foreign?) readers that might not know about this; in Finland there is actually a law that forbids bloggers to do co-operation with brands without clearly stating it in their blog posts. So if I ever get a chance for a co-operation with a brand that I actually like (Hello, Twin Flower!), you can rest assured that I will most certainly tell it very clearly. ;)
Wow, we have the same ideals about Lolita style! I've always wanted the more natural and 'relaxed' (i.e. not as over the top) look of old-school Lolita to come back into fashion, as well as less heavy make-up.
VastaaPoistaIt makes me really sad how little old school lolita gets appreciation. It always inspires me! I've been meaning to do a old school inspired coordination forever - I have this itch to coordinate black shoes with a pastel coloured dress. :D
PoistaWhat a lovely post! Twin Flower has such nice designs.
VastaaPoistaMy list would be very similar to yours to be honest. I absolutely agree about the fabrics. Printed cotton does get a bit boring after all. I'd add a variation in blouse materials. More lace blouses please.
Thanks dear! ^^
PoistaI knew you'd agree about the fabrics! I also agree, more lace blouses and lace everything, please.
Woah, Twin Flower pieces look beautiful <3
VastaaPoistaI agree with you, I would love to see more relaxed and natural coordinations (I haven't seen a single one in a while...), maybe with mori kei inspiration :)
Have a nice day!
Teapots and Frills
They really do! ^^ I'd love to see lolita and mori styles combined, too!
PoistaI know I haven't been into this fashion for too long compared to veterans but I think I feel the same with the list. I long to see wearable coords and less costumey-like. Lolitas seem to take pride of lolita fashion excusively not being a "costume", but sometimes.. some dresses and coords..have that costume-vibe.. like the nun lolita? It looks great but also kind of weird when you think about it.
VastaaPoistaI'm also fed up with ott looks being some kind of a "standard". I enjoy simpler coords way more. And I don't think it's an unpopular opinion nowadays! :)
I have noticed the same contradiction as you, the really un-natural looking wigs make the fashion appear more costume-like, which I personally have never liked. I'm glad the pastel coloured twin tails wig obsession is fading, at least. u_u
PoistaI would prefer if Lolita were more wearable and less showy and impractical
VastaaPoistaYou and me both, sister!
PoistaI completely agree with you on the 'less is more' idea. I always find it difficult to convince strangers/friends/even myself that Lolita is not a costume when I think of all the wigs/ott accessoires etc.
VastaaPoistaThat brand does look interesting. Their designs somehow have a Victorian Maiden feel to them. ^.^
That is true and I agree! I never liked the very un-natural looking wigs, they do make this fashion less like a style and more like a costume. As annoying as it is to have those "Nice costume!" types of comments, we can't really blame the passers by for them if we wear wigs that are so obviously fake. :/
PoistaTwin Flower is just lovely, I'm proud that we have such great indie brands in Finland! I'm eager to see what they will do in the future.
Great post, beautiful images. I completely agree with you, although I'm unsure how to build those sorts of flawless cords - IMO it's harder to pull off an effortless vibe than OTT. I personally wear a wig because I'm very unhappy with my natural hair (frizzy, brittle, and I have to colour it) so a wig gives me confidence.
VastaaPoistaThank you! It's true that an air of effortlessness is indeed hard to achieve. Much harder than going OTT, indeed!
PoistaI have nothing against wigs that look natural - on the contrary, they can be quite charming! (It's only the un-natural ones that I detest.) I'm unhappy with my hair, too, but I keep trying... Sometimes I wonder, if I should get a bob cut wig, as I really adore bob cuts but am not sure if one would suit me. A wig would be an easy and safe way to test it. x)
